“CHANGE “ by Carl Liungman

Over the past few years, Swedish pianist and composer Carl Liungman has emerged as a distinctive figure in the world of contemporary music. By seamlessly merging his classical training with modern sensibilities, Liungman has carved out a sound that bridges past and present. Raised in Malmö, his musical roots are as diverse as they are deep, ranging from Mozart to The Beatles. This eclectic background laid the groundwork for Liungman’s unique ability to fuse genres, creating music that resonates across a broad spectrum.

Liungman’s early classical piano education provided him with a solid foundation, but his discovery of jazz legends like Jan Johansson and Esbjörn Svensson opened his eyes to new harmonic and rhythmic possibilities. These influences, alongside Glenn Gould's masterful interpretations of Bach and Scriabin, broadened his approach to classical music, allowing him to push the boundaries of tradition. His admiration for contemporary bands such as Coldplay also brought an additional layer of popular music sensibility, a blend that shines through in his latest album, *Change*. This nine-track work is an intimate exploration of themes like loss and renewal, with each piece offering a glimpse into Liungman’s deeply personal journey.

The album begins with the delicate yet powerful "Mother," which immediately showcases Liungman’s technical prowess. His fingers glide across the keys with precision, creating a cascade of notes that captivate the listener. As the album progresses, pieces like "Final Days" add weight and complexity, while the lighter, more "Hope" offers a moment of introspection. The piece "Father" takes the listener back into emotionally charged territory with its slow, melodic progression, blending technical skill with heartfelt expression.

By the time the album concludes with the titular track, "Change," Liungman’s full emotional and artistic range has been laid bare. The minimalist, wordless vocals in this closing piece emphasize the raw emotional power of his music, where the piano alone becomes the narrator of his story. For fans of solo piano compositions, *Change* is a true gem—each track a vignette of Liungman’s inner world. His ability to evoke deep feeling through melody alone is a testament to his artistry, making *Change* a must-listen for those seeking a moving, introspective musical experience.
